Carter was flogging the book about the 100th anniversary of the magazine (a bit of a stretch since it wasn't published for 47 years,1936 until 1983). Carter's analogy of his job was that of a choirmaster: “You’re . . . trying to get the best out of everybody, and trying to get everybody to sing in unison.”
