CSME Editors' awards finalists announced

The Canadian Society of Magazine Editors (CSME) has announced the shortlist of finalists for the 2017 Editors' Choice Awards. The winners will be announced on June 7 at the CSME Awards and Social, 5:30 pm at The Pilot, in Toronto, 22 Cumberland Street. Along with the category winners,  winners will be announced for awards for Best Front of Book, the Jim Cormier Award for Best Display Writing and Best Art Integration and CSME’s highest honour, the Editor of the Year Award.
Kirstine Stewart will deliver a keynote address about staying ahead of the curve in our ever-changing media environment and cultivating innovation in your team. As Chief Strategy Officer for Diply, a content platform with more than one billion monthly views, and the former Vice-President of Media at Twitter, Stewart has consistently been at the forefront of media’s evolution. She is also the author of the national bestseller, Our Turn.

CSME panel to discuss going digital,
first or foremost

The Canadian Society of Magazine Editors (CSME) is diving into the issues surrounding magazines going "digital first".

The panelists will be Laura De Carufel, editor-in-chief of The Kit (a magazine that was initially a digital-only publication); Lianne George, editor-in-chief of  Chatelaine,  and Edward Fraser, managing editor of digitally-minded The Hockey News, will talk about practices from their magazines and answer questions.

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2017, starting at 5:30 p.m. at The Pilot, in the Stealth Lounge (second floor), 22 Cumberland Street, Toronto (near Yonge and Bloor). $10 for members, $20 for non-members (or $20/member and $30/non-member at the door)

A reminder: the next day is the deadline for the 2017 Canadian Editors' Choice Awards by the Canadian Society of Magazine Editors (CSME). Entries due by 4:30 p.m., Friday March 3.

Noreen Flanagan, of Elle Canada, named editor of the year in CSME Editor's Choice awards

Noreen Flanagan of Elle Canada magazine was named editor of the year at the 2016 Editor's Choice awards from the Canadian Society of Magazine Editors (CSME). This and other awards were presented at a special event on Wednesday night during the MagNet conference.

Flanagan's Elle Canada was also named magazine of the year in medium circulation, tied with Today's Parent, edited by Sasha Emmons, which also won as best tablet, for best web editorial (TodaysParent.com) and the Jim Cormier award for display writing. 
  • Small circulation magazine of the year was presented to BCBusiness, edited by Matt O'Grady.
  • Trade magazine of the year was Ignite Magazine, editor Laura Bickle. 
  • Best tablet magazine was Today's Parent, edited by Sasha Emmons and with a team including Stephanie Han-Kim, Jamie Piper, Sanjay Pinnock, Nicole Chung and Nica Patricio.
  • Custom magazine of the year was Mercedes-Benz magazine, edited by Natasha Mekhail.
  • Best front-of-the-book was a tie between BCBusiness, edited by Matt O'Grady and Fairmont Magazine, edited by Natasha Mekhail.
  • Best art integration was won by Western Living magazine, edited by Anicka Quinn and art directed by Paul Roelofs.
