Front Page

The March issue of controlled monthly The Jewish magazine has a cover story on Steve Page of the Barenaked Ladies and a thumbnail on the cover of its special section inside on kids' camps, fronted by a joyful tumble of young campers.

Now maybe it's just us, but we'd have played up the attractive young people rather than the somewhat dour, intimidating, unsmiling (isn't he an entertainer?) Page, even if the coverline promises us provocatively that we'll get The Barenaked Truth.

The Jewish Magazine, which was founded in 1995, says it is the only Hebrew/English magazine of its kind in the Greater Toronto Area and claims 35,000 readers for its print edition and 40,000 readers from its online edition.

Oh c'mon, he looks funny even when he isn't smiling.

He looks smug, folks. Actually, it's interesting that a discussion of him appears on a mag blog, as this fellow is no friend of Canadian magazines. Witness an episode of the original CBC show counterSpin (back when Avi Lewis was host). It was around the time of Bill C-55, and Page appeared as a guest along with Ken Finkleman. In a nutshell, he was one of those folks who said at the time that if our magazines are so good, they don't need the likes of a federal magazine policy designed to stream ad dollars to original Canadian content -- arguing that they should be able to compete with US books mano o mano. To hell with economies of scale. And he had that same smug face you now see on the cover of the Jewish Magazine. To paraphrase Finkleman on that same show, I'm continually amazed by people who can speak at length about subjects they know nothing about.
