U of T Press sells printing division

U of T Press, which provides services to many small, literary and cultural magazines and specialized academic journals, is getting out of the traditional printing business. It is putting its printing division up for sale, according to an item in today's Globe and Mail. "Over the past few years, changes in technologies and print buying practices, coupled with increasing competition, have dramatically affected the offset printing industry," said John Yates, president, publisher and CEO.

U of T Press's mandate, which continues, is to publish the results of scholarly research. The company -- which, despite its name, operates independently of the university -- will continue to operate a retail and distribution divisions and UTP Print (digital printing).

Some of U of T Press's clients -- particularly specialized medical and scientific journals -- have given up printed publication altogether, publishing online.
