Selecting the best of the best of...

It's seldom you get a chance to see behind the curtain when it comes to selecting a cover for a mainstream magazine.

For the New York magazine annual "Best of New York" issue (March 9 - 16) it invited submissions from a number of designers and while it chose the cover on the right (from Brooklyn-based street artist KAWS, a.k.a. Brian Donnelly), they also provide readers with a slide show of the other submissions.

Personally, I think they made a good choice.

It's striking how many of the designs show no awareness of the magazine's mission or its need to attract readers at the newsstand. Yes, New York made the right choice. But there wasn't any real competition.

I completely disagree with Rona on this. I think New York went the safest route (or should I say most boring). The cover by Tom Brown is fabulous (it's nice to see a Canadian included in the finalist list). I also think the simplicity of the cover with the box of stars by Mother design is great too. I am surprised that Chris Dixon didn't select one of these two options as he is usually open to pushing the limits with his covers and turning his back on the conventional.
