Annual Charles Oberdorf Memorial Award endowed with help from his friends and family

After  his death in September 2011, family and friends of the late Charles Oberdorf set out to create a memorial award at Ryerson University's Chang School of Continuing Education. We (and I am pleased to have played a part) are very proud to announce that sufficient money -- about $28,000 --  was raised to make permanent an annual $1,000 award.

The first award was presented last fall by Oberdorf's wife Mechtild Hoppenrath and his daughter, Anya Oberdorf to Jill Goodwin, a part-time student who was nearing completion of  her certificate in the magazine and web publishing program.

Charles was a man of many parts, principally as a well-established and highly regarded writer and editor, known in particular for his work in the fields of travel, architecture, design, food and gardening. During his some 18 years teaching at Ryerson, latterly as the coordinator of the program, he shared his professional skills with his students, and imbued them with his own love of story-telling and journalism.

Contributions may still be made; the larger the endowment, the more awards may be given. Tax-receiptable donations may be made online at

What lovely news. Thank you for sharing information on how to continue contributing. I for one wouldn't be in the industry if it weren't for the program, and Charles was always so generous with his ideas. A fitting tribute.
