Maisonneuve wins magazine of the year for third time since 2004 at National Magazine Awards
Maisonneuve magazine, Friday night was named magazine of the year (for the third time since 2004) at the National Magazine Awards. In addition the national quarterly magazine based in Montreal won four gold and 1 silver medals.
The gold awards were for health & medicine (“Worth the Risk” by Alison Motluk), photojournalism & photo Essay, and best new magazine photographer (both for “The Maidan” by Marta Iwanek). The silver was for best magazine cover (“TV We Hate Issue”).

- Writer Desmond Cole was the top individual winner of the evening (3 medals), winning gold for best new magazine writer as well as silver in essays and in personal journalism for his stirring essay “The Skin I’m In,” about police discrimination against black men, published in Toronto Life.
- Photographer Marta Iwanek won gold in photojournalism & photo essay, and was named Canada’s best new magazine photographer, for “The Maidan” (Maisonneuve).
- Journalist Valérie Borde won 2 awards from 4 nominations for her work in L’actualité: a gold in business (“Le virage vert de la Chine”) and a silver in service: lifestyle. Valérie Borde has now won 8 NMAs in her career.
- Russell Smith won the fiction gold for “Raccoons” published in CNQ: Canadian Notes & Queries.
- Author and poet David McGimpsey won the poetry gold Medal for “The HighRoad” in Vallum magazine.
- Photographer Hudson Hayden won gold and silver in still-life photography for two different pieces in Globe Style Advisor— gold for “Butcher Crop.” For Globe Style Advisor this was its first NMA gold, and it also won two others: in the categories portrait photography and spot illustration.
- Art Director Marcey Andrews won 2 NMAs for her work directing “The Future of Everything” issue from New Trail. This issue won a gold in art direction of a single magazine article and a silver in art direction of an entire issue. The issue also won honourable mention in magazine covers and editorial package.
- Journalist Jonathan Trudel won his eighth award with a gold in sports & recreation, for “Laurent chez les grands” (L’actualité).
- Journalist Alison Motluk won her fifth NMA with a gold in health & medicine, for “Worth the Risk” (Maisonneuve).
- Illustrator Jillian Tamaki won her fifth NMA with a gold in words & pictures, for “Our Ever-Changing Moods” (The Walrus).
- Astronaut Chris Hadfield won a National Magazine Award in an honourary fashion: Chris Hadfield was the guest editor of the Maclean’s “Space Issue,” which won the NMA gold for editorial package.
- Hockey superstar Connor McDavid was the cover model for the gold -winning best single issue from Sportsnet.
