Entries open for Canadian Cover Awards

Entries are open for the Canadian Cover Awards, produced by the Circulation Management Association of Canada and Magazines Canada. Deadline for submissions is January 26.
There are eight award categories. Newsstand sales are worth 50 percent of an entry's final score; the remaining 50 percent is determined by five judges representing our industry: a retailer, a wholesaler, a national distributor, a circulation director and an art director. The entry fee is $90 for the first entry, $75 for the second and $55 for all additional entries. For the Small Magazine category, the cost is $35. Entries are made online.

Nominations are also welcomed for Newsstand Marketer of the Year, for which there is no entry fee. It is meant to recognize an individual working for a Canadian publishing house, a national distributor or a wholesaler who has demonstrated passion and innovation—and produced results—for a newsstand project.

Canadian Cover Awards winners announced

August 2012
The new Canadian Cover Awards were presented last night in Toronto -- successor to the Canadian Newsstand Awards. The new competition, co-presented by the Circulation Management Association of Canada (CMC) and Magazines Canada, differs in several respects from its predecessor, including being agnostic about circulation size.

The new awards are strictly based in seven categories on success of covers in Canadian single copy sales (50% of score based on sales, 50% on jury selection for cover excellence). Previously, small circ titles such as This Magazine were repeat winners among entries under 10,000. This year the smallest circulation winner was Sky News (25,000).

Winners were:
  • Fashion, Shopping and Bridal: Elle Québec, August 2012
  • General Interest, Arts, Lifestyle & Regional: Legion Magazine, January/February 2012
  • Home & Decor: Style at Home, September 2011
  • News, Business & Celebrity: Canadian Business, February 2012
  • SIPs and New Magazines: Maclean's, Royal Wedding special issue
  • Sports and Leisure: SkyNews, May/June 2012
  • Women's Service: Chatelaine, February 2012
  • Newsstand Marketer of the Year: Greg Keilty, SkyNews
For details of the editorial and circulation teams behind the winners, see this release from Magazines Canada.

Revived Canadian Cover Awards and new logo
take flight

We kinda like the new logo for the Canadian Cover Awards -- the renamed Canadian Newsstand Awards, co-sponsored by Magazines Canada and the Circulation Management Association of Canada (CMC). As we reported in an earlier post, the awards were started in 2002 by Masthead, but it decided last year to discontinue them. However, it was such a valued program that the new partnership was struck to carry them on, albeit under a new name.
The new logo was created by K9Design's Norm Lourenco, who says of it:
"The new logo represents the Canadian magazine industry, and aspires to instill pride in the nominees and winners. Magazine visuals, have been done to death. The Canada Goose, illustrated with feathers like pages, represents many aspects of the awards: the Canadian content, the leader of the flock, the best, the winner…it’s a bird in flight – it’s all good.”
The awards program is open to English- or French-language magazines and must have single copies sold in Canada, containing a minimum of 80% Canadian editorial content. The awards are sponsored by Masthead, Covers Sell, K9Design, LS Travel and the Alliance for Audited Media. Submissions are accepted starting January 7 and close January 25. Single entries are the same as the newsstand awards were ($95) but multiple entries are discounted ($75 for second entry, $55 for each additional). Entries may be submitted online. Full list of categories.  Scores will be determined half by single copy sales  half by a panel of industry judges including a retailer, a wholesaler, a circ director, a national distributor and an art director. Newsstand Marketer of the Year will continue to be awarded.
The new logo seems to complement the logo for the National Magazine Awards, created a few years ago by Hambly & Woolley.
