Canadian Business Media Association now officially merged with Magazines Canada

The Canadian Business Media Association (CBMA) has now officially merged with Magazines Canada. The intention to do so was announced last February during the a Business Media Leadership Summit hosted by Magazines Canada. The decision was unanimously approved at a special meeting of the CBMA's membership on November 29 and will be marked by a reception today in Toronto.

The merger brings Magazines Canada membership to nearly 400 magazines, including 25 business titles.

The merger may mean the revival of the Kenneth R. Wilson Awards for business media, which was suspended this year pending the merger. "Plans for 2018 will be based upon the recommendations of Magazines Canada’s new business media advisory committee," said a release.

“Magazines Canada has been a leading supporter of the B2B industry for many years now, and this merger is a great step for our sector. It strengthens our voice on the national stage and improves our ability to coordinate on projects that will mean a brighter future for business media,” said Scott Jamieson, vice chair of Magazines Canada’s board of directors and director of content and engagement for Annex Business Media, a CBMA member.
“This move is exactly what we need to do to align our efforts to build a foundation for a stronger trade press in the future,” said John Kerr, CBMA president and CEO of Kerrwil. “In a digital age, having both the consumer and trade press under one roof just makes a ton of sense and I am personally looking forward to rolling up my sleeves to support the next efforts.”

Magazine Grands Prix announces diversity as central tenet of judging process in new awards

One of the just-announced principles guiding the Magazine Grands Prix, the new awards program being piloted by Magazines Canada for 2017, is celebrating diversity. This includes having indigenous judges on the majority (eventually all) juries and to announce the entire roster of judges during the submission period (that is, in advance of their judging.) These are among principles included in the just-released  Guiding Principles for Adjudicating and Celebrating Excellence in Canada’s Magazine Media,
Stanley Péan
[photo: Laurence Labat]

There will be two judging co-chairs: author, commentator and critic Stanley Péan and award-winning writer Soraya Peerbaye. [see below]

Magazines Canada announced the awards and fellowship program [for up to 3 individuals] in September. The MGP awards will feature 26 categories: 13 awards for individuals and creators, and 13 for magazines that honour creative and editorial vision and execution.
“Stanley Péan and I are honoured and immensely pleased to be co-chairing the adjudication process of the Magazine Grands Prix,” said Peerbaye [in a release.] “The team at Magazines Canada has developed a far-seeing vision for the awards; energetic and generous, they are broadening the circle of inclusion, and invigorating the conversation on both popular and critical culture in the magazine sector.”
Soraya Peerbaye
Among the principles announced are:
  • To build and execute an awards program that showcases the sector’s full range and excellence: seamlessly bilingual in English and French, reflective of Canada’s diversity, and open to all;
  • To represent a diversity of artistic and cultural practices, perspectives and expertise on all juries, valuing the magazine sector’s creators and the public equally. Juries will be composed to reflect the diversity of Canada with regard to Indigenous peoples, race, regions, official languages, and gender;
  • To have Indigenous jurists on the majority of the panels. This is just the beginning. The goal is to have Indigenous jurists on every single panel;
  • To compose juries with care for plurality: no jury in which there is only one non-white jurist, and many in which there is a variety of diverse representatives. All jurists must feel able to speak freely and judge the submissions on their merits, without any obligation to represent minority or identity-based views;
  • To reveal our entire roster of jurists during the submissions period [in this case between December 12 and January 30]: underrepresented communities must see themselves reflected and welcomed in order to participate fully;
  • To aspire to do better than simply meeting the principles outlined and, in instances where we fall short of these goals, to recognize it and take action to improve.
“We are building a robust, transparent awards program that we can be proud of: right from the ground up,” said Matthew Holmes, Magazines Canada’s president and CEO. “With Canada’s 150th being celebrated next year, we wanted to look forward and make a very intentional shift to include the full diversity of Canada’s creators and—just as important—our community of readers, right into our judging process.”
The announcement of the guidelines and management of the judging process apparently intends to contrast directly with the way the National Magazine Awards Foundation has run its awards for the past 40 years. For instance, NMA judges  have generally not been announced before judging is completed and there is no provision for a particular makeup of judging panels other than requiring people from the industry, people with expertise in the subject area and people without a conflict of interest. The NMAs announced in September some major changes to its board and process for the magawards and also for its Digital Publishing Awards including the recruitment of a roster of international judges

Magazines Canada announces regional volunteers of the year

Magazines Canada has announced the 2015 Volunteer of the Year awards, which are to be presented during the MagNet: Canada's Magazine Conference at the association's annual reception on Thursday, June 9 at the Courtyard Toronto Downtown, 475 Yonge Street.

As had been previously reported, Chris Purcell, the vice-president of marketing and circulation and general manager Toronto for TVA Publications has been named Magazines Canada over all volunteer of the year. The regional volunteers of the year are:

Magazine Association of BC Volunteer of the Year Jane Hope got her start in publishing 10 years ago at Vallum in Montreal. Since then, she's made stops at the MPub program at Simon Fraser University, UBC Press and Modern Dog magazine. Today, she's Senior Editor at ECHO Storytelling Agency, where they solve business problems with publishing solutions—which yes, means magazines.

Alberta Magazine Publishers Association Volunteer of the Year Brnesh Berhe is a passionate human rights advocate who saw an opportunity to raise greater awareness and initiate change with the power of storytelling, launching Markermagazine. Brnesh self-published the independent publication from her home in Edmonton, while juggling a full-time job and a side gig as a freelancer. She wore many hats at the magazine—editor, art director, publisher, sales associate to provide a niche outlet for writers to write and report on a range of issues, from music and the arts to racial and sexual inequality.

Magazines Ontario Volunteer of the Year Patricia Clarke began her career in journalism more than half a century ago as a Hollywood reporter for United Press International. In 1965 she joined the staff of The United Church Observer as "Women's Editor." She became interim editor in 1979, and officially retired in 1980, but in 1996 re-established an ongoing relationship with The Observer as volunteer editor of the Letters section. Now 92, she continues to deliver award-winning copy on time, month in and month out; the Letters section remains the most-read part of the magazine.

Magazines du Québec Volunteer of the Year Jean-François started his career in magazines in 1996 at Transcontinental Publications (now TC Media). In 2005 he joined Éditions Genex, and was promoted in 2006 to Assistant General Manager, where he managed everyday operations of the group's magazines. In 2008, he became Bayard Presse Canada's Information Systems Manager, overseeing subscription and book software for the Canadian market. He is now Analyst and Fulfillment Manager for the more than 80 magazines published and managed by Bayard Presse Canada and Senior Publications. Jean-François joined the board of Magazines du Québec in 2010, and is currently its president.

Volunteers needed to help run
MagNet conference in June

Magazines Canada is looking for student volunteers to assist at this year's MagNet industry conference. The payoff is that, depending on the amount of time you volunteer, the more access you gain to free sessions. And the more opportunities there are to network in a place where many of the industry's leaders gather.
This year’s dates are June 7-9, with sessions happening on the 8th and 9th. It’ll be held at the Courtyard Toronto Downtown Hotel at 475 Yonge Street. Students can learn more about the conference at magnet.magazinescanada.caand if they’d like to sign up to volunteer, they can do so atmagazinescanada.ca/magnet-volunteer-form. Every year Mags Canada gets applications from more volunteers than we can use, so it’s best not to wait to sign up. Typically, the roster fills up by the end of April.

Magazines Canada and Canadian Business Media are merging under Magazines Canada name

Canadian Business Media Association (CBMA) and Magazines Canada are merging under the Magazines Canada banner. The announcement was made Tuesday night in conjunction with the fourth annual Magazines Canada Business Media Leadership Summit now being held in King City, north of Toronto.

CBMA Chair John Kerr, President and CEO of Kerrwil Publications Limited, said:
"With the marketplace and regulatory challenges faced by all magazine media publishers today, the CBMA Board agreed unanimously that bringing together one very strong association is absolutely vital at this juncture."
Magazines Canada Chair Douglas Knight, President of St. Joseph Media, said:
"We are delighted to welcome our CBMA colleagues to Magazines Canada. Working together strengthens our voice as we address common issues that affect the magazine industry as a whole. We will also be better positioned to more effectively leverage our resources to focus on the unique needs of distinct sectors of the industry, be they business, cultural, regional or consumer."
The CBMA, formerly the Canadian Business Press (CBP), has a highly respected 96-year history of delivering services to B2B publishers and community stakeholders, including its flagship annual Kenneth R. Wilson Awards founded in 1954. The 2016 Kenneth R. Wilson Awards will be presented as usual in June, after which a larger Canadian business media advisory committee will undertake a review of the awards program and other B2B programming within Magazines Canada‘s long-term planning process, being managed by the new CEO Matthew Holmes.

Over the coming months, as both association boards go through a transition process more information will be released to their respective memberships.

The creation of a "big tent" has been a long time coming. (In fact, one of the first posts on this blog, 10 years ago (egad) promoted the idea of industry associations working together as one.)

CBP had for many years striven to stand apart, even in the face of Magazines Canada accepting business media into its membership and several larger publishers of trade and business media properties decamping to Magazines Canada, including Rogers Publishing and Annex Business Media.

In May 2011, the CBP announced that by a unanimous decision of its members it was giving up being a member-driven organization in favour of becoming a foundation with the principal goal of running the KRW Awards.

But then in 2015, the rebranded CBM announced it would once again be a membership-based trade organization, undertaking training, networking, webinars, tutorials and the awards program as well as launching a b2b blog.

Now, it is throwing in with Magazines Canada to offer members a range of advocacy, professional development and other services to a combined membership.

The longish goodbye: Mark Jamison retiring leaving as CEO of Magazines Canada at end of 2015

One of the worst-kept secrets in the magazine industry has been that Mark Jamison, the CEO of Magazines Canada, is retiring leaving the organization at the end of 2015. The organization has now made this official with a posting about the process it is undertaking to replace the 16-year veteran.
"This is very much Mark’s decision, and as you would expect, he has provided ample advance notice to allow for a smooth transition," says Michael Fox, Chair of Magazines Canada's Board of Directors. "All of the Board members join me in acknowledging the tremendous leadership that Mark has provided, and in appreciating his practical approach to planning the future of the association as well as evolving his career."
The Magazines Canada Board of Directors formed a CEO search committee at its March 27 meeting, responding to the planned departure of Jamison on December 31, 2015.
"In the future, Mark plans to take on consulting projects in not-for-profit management," Fox says. "Mark has helped Magazines Canada stay current and focused on the future during a period of tremendous changes in magazines, our audiences, media technology and of course public policy priorities of the federal and provincial governments. He and the staff have made Magazines Canada a virtual big tent that provides a place to gather, to learn and to develop for people involved with all types of magazines. He has helped evolve the Magazines Canada organization to serve its members efficiently, effectively and enthusiastically. We wish him all the best in his new venture."
