Metropolitan Home being revived on a contingent basis by Hearst

Mavens of shelter magazines may be hugging themselves now that it has been announced that Metropolitan Home is being revived -- at least for now. Originally published by Hachette, it was closed in 2009 to much lamentation. It is now to be back on the newsstands this month under the imprimatur of Hearst magazines, which acquired it in 2011 along with other Hachette U.S. titles. According to an article in AdWeek:
The magazine’s relaunch follows the test-issue template set by other Hearst titles like HGTV and Dr. Oz. The Spring/Summer issue of Metropolitan Home will be released on April 11—70,000 copies will be sold on newsstands with another 45,000 going to subscribers of other Hearst magazines such as Elle Décor, Town & Country and Esquire—and, depending on reader and advertiser interest, more issues could follow.

Frank magazine is back to mock,
provoke and expose

[This post was updated] Frank magazine is back and, as it says, under old management. The former editor Michael Bate has revived the satirical and muckraking national magazine and is seeking subscribers. Formerly best known in print, it is now available that way again (24 issues)and as a yearly online subscription  (either print or online for $129.95) or for a monthly online subscription of $14.95.
"After a well-deserved period of rest and relaxation (rehab and restitution, shurely!–ed.), we’ve resumed our mission to expose the guilty, provoke the greedy and mock the powerful....
"To commemorate the reigniting of national Frank, we're offering subscribers an authentic, first-edition, hand-painted Rob Ford Bobble-Belly™, absolutely free with a one-year subscription to Frank--online or in print."
[Update: Frank closed in October 2008 when it had about 5,000 subscribers, compared with its peak circulation of 20,000. There was discussion about it coming back in blog format, with a paywall and a monthly sub price of $15. Bate was the editor from 1989 until 2005 until it closed. Now he says the environment is ripe for its return (could it have anything to do with Rob Ford, the Senate? -- ed.).

The national Frank, based in Ottawa, was a spinoff of a Halifax-based biweekly regional publication which started in 1987 and has continued since in both print and subscription-based online form.]

Frank magazine is reported on the verge of a comeback

The national edition of Frank magazine, the satirical and muckraking publication which closed in October 2008, is apparently being revived as an online publication starting in the fall, according to a post on Canada.com by Postmedia News. Michael Bate, who ran the magazine from 1989 is bringing the national Frank back in a blog format -- similar to Andrew Sullivan's The Dish -- with a paywall and a subscription price between $10 and $15 a month.

The national Frank, based in Ottawa, was a spinoff of a Halifax-based biweekly regional publication which started in 1987 and has continued since in both print and subscription-based online form.
“I think things have changed," Bate told the CBC. "The zeitgeist has changed, it’s more like it was in the early ‘90s when Mulroney was in office. People are fed up with the Tories. I think there is an appetite for satire and muckraking scandal sheets like Frank. So I’m optimistic.”

Dogs in Canada reviewing partnership proposals, pushing back against imitators

The Canadian Kennel Club has received several proposals to partner on a revived Dogs in Canada magazine and its associated Annual. But for now, it is apparently dealing with outsiders who are intent on poaching their lucrative breeder listings and it has posted a note on its website that approaches to breeders for 2013 listings are confusing the market and is "not us and it's not the new Dogs in Canada Annual".
"So, to end the confusion and to be perfectly clear, it is the intention of the CKC to produce a new Dogs in Canada magazine and Dogs in Canada Annual! We are currently reviewing and encouraged by proposals received from big-name players in the Canadian publishing industry, as well as highly-targeted “boutique” companies noted for their expertise with specialty and well-known niche publications. Once our partner has been chosen, we will communicate our advertising information to all interested parties for the 2013 publications."
