TFEW tops 400 members

Congratulations to the Toronto Freelance Editors and Writers list, which has just crested 400 members. TFEW runs as a plain vanilla e-mail exchange and the often lively threads about topics including getting paid as a freelancer, the finer (if obscure) points of grammar, movies, music, books you name it has apparently caught a lot of attention. The list started over 10 years ago with a meeting in the living room of freelancer and teacher David Hayes and continues to be run by Hayes, Alex Gillis and Jess Ross. Whenever I refer to TFEW, there are people who want to know about it and how to join. Go to http://ca.groups.yahoo.com/group/tfew/ and click on "Join this group"

How interesting! I'm on a similar list, with lively discussions on the same topics and more, with more members, and about 1500 posts every month. Of course, you do have to be a member of the Editors' Association of Canada to be on it. But I've long felt the EAC email list by itself is worth the price of membership. (BTW, I'm just an ordinary EAC member, not speaking on an official basis, and I wasn't asked to post this.)

These kind of lists are invaluable, creating a community for journalists who don't always have the benefit of water-cooler conversations with colleagues.

I think that TFEW goes a long way in creating a better understanding between editors and writers. I hope that more freelance editors, and editors who do some freelance writing, will join.
