This mag, The Beaver, The Hockey News & Maclean's win newsstand awards

This Magazine won the small magazine category for the third year in a row in the Canadian Newsstand Awards, which were handed out last night. It won for its July/August 2008 issue with a cover image of Jack Layton.

In the mid-sized category, The Beaver: Canada's History Magazine won for its February 2008 issue marking the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec. (That issue marked the first time the magazine had done separate English and French editions.)

In the large magazine category, The Hockey News from Transcontinental won for its July 29 2008 issue and in the extra large magazine category, the winner was the Julyl 7 2008 issue of Maclean's.

Marketer of the Year was presented to Mike Hughes, national marketing manager at Transcontinental Media.

Winning magazines in the large and medium categories get a $3,500 credit towards promotional programs on newsstands owned by HDS Retail. In the small category, the winner gets $1,000 credit and $500 cash.

Awards are based on newsstand sales performance (worth 50% of the final score) and qualitative factors judged by a panel of five judges representing key players in the newsstand mix: a retailer, a wholesaler, a national distributor, a circulation director and an art director.

The awards are run by Masthead magazine and were held in collaboration with the Circulation Marketing Association of Canada (CMC).
