Cartoonist and illustrator Seth wins 2010 Doug Wright Award for graphic novel

Seth, the Guelph-based cartoonist, has won a 2010 Doug Wright Award for best book for his graphic novel, George Sprott (1894-1975). Seth (aka Gregory Gallant) is well-known for his illustrations, which have appeared on the cover of The New Yorker and will be on the cover of the summer books issue of The Walrus magazine.

His George Sprott, the fictional life of an old man told in interviews, flashbacks and personal reminiscences, was originally serialized in the New York Times magazine, and selections from it were featured in Best American Comics 2009 [said a story in the Edmonton Journal]
This year’s prize was judged by Toronto Star books critic Geoff Pevere, author and Globe and Mail music columnist Carl Wilson, cartoonist and 2009 Doug Wright Award winner Matt Forsythe, and artist/cartoonist Fiona Smyth.Other award winners were Michael DeForge as best emerging talent for his Lose #1 (Koyama Press) and Marc Bell, who won the Pigskin Peters Award for Hot Potatoe (Drawn & Quarterly). Both George Sprott and Hot Potatoe were published by Drawn and Quarterly Press.
The awards were created in 2004 and named after legendary Canadian cartoonist Doug Wright, who created the long-running strip Doug Wright’s Family. It was presented in conjunction with the 2010 Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF).
