Student journalist winners honoured at the Emerge Media Awards

The Emerge Media Awards were made on March 22, showcasing the achievements of student journalists from across Canada. Emerge was launched in 2015 as the first and only national post-secondary media awards program in Canada.

The awards, administered by the University of Guelph-Humber, recognize the best writing, editing, videography, audio, digital design, communications and public relations done at the post-secondary level. This year, the EMAs attracted more than 250 submissions from universities and colleges from coast to coast. The judging is conducted by an independent panel of industry representatives, including editors, broadcasters, producers, and other media professionals. [Disclosure: I was one of the judges.]

Emerge Awards winners named for media work at the postsecondary level

The winners of the third annual Emerge Media Awards (EMAs) were announced Monday night at the event’s awards ceremony in Toronto. Designed to celebrate and showcase the achievements of journalism, media studies and communications students in Canada, the EMAs seek to recognize the best writing, editing, videography, audio, graphic design, communications and public relations work at the postsecondary level.

The winners and runners-up were selected by an independent panel of judges from a record 313 submissions, the eight winning individuals or teams represented various post-secondary institutions across the country:

The Emerge Awards and the associated conference are presented by the University of Guelph-Humber, a partnership between the University of Guelph and the Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning. Guelph-Humber students earn two credentials; a university honours degree from the University of Guelph and a college diploma from the Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning. 

2016 Emerge Media Awards presented at gala event produced by Guelph/Humber

The 2nd annual Emerge Media Awards, produced by the student of the University of Guelph/Humber , were presented Monday evening in Toronto.

The event crosses all sorts of media lines, from such things as written word to public relations, from multimedia to radio, from video to advertising and photography -- all areas of study offered at Guelph/Humber, although entries are welcomed from media students across the country.

Last night the Emerge Media Awards were presented at the University of Guelph-Humber, showcasing student creativity in writing, editing, videography, audio, digital design, communications and public relations work done by journalism, media studies and communications students at the post-secondary level from across Canada. The winners were selected by a jury of independent professionals drawn from the media industries. [Disclosure: I was a judge for the writing category.] This is the first year for multiple media categories. The event started five years ago as a recognition of work in Emerge magazine, which is still published as a part of the awards program. The awards gala is followed by a whole day conference.
