Manitoba magazine awards ("Maggies") finalists named

The finalists have been announced for the Maggie Awards, presented by the Manitoba Magazine Publishers Association. The winners will find out who they are at a June 22 luncheon ceremony at Red River College in Winnipeg. The finalists (see below) were chosen from among more than 50 entries. 

There are five finalists for the top prize, magazine of the year: Canada’s History, Conservator,  Geez, Herizons and Kayak.

Several magazines have multiple finalists, including Canada's History (7), Prairie Fire (6), Conservator (3), Herizons (3) and Kayak (3).

Manitoba magazines offer 3 for $33 subscription bundle to mark 30th anniversary

To suitably mark its 30 years of supplying Manitoba magazines to readers, the Manitoba Magazine Publishers' Association has packaged a special 3 for $33 offer, with a value of up to $150. Fourteen publishers have signed on to be are part of the offer, including  Ayoko, Geez, Horse Country, Sports Life, Canadian Dog Fancier, Rhubarb, SAY, Canada’s History, Kayak, Covet, CV2, The Cottager, Prairie Fire and Border Crossings.

"Many of these magazines you will not see on the newsstand racks because they are focused on local people and their activities (Horse Country, the Cottager for instance), or they focus on a niche readership: Geez, Rhubarb, Border Crossings are examples," says MMPA executive director Linda Hazelwood.

(The Mini-Maggies are a departure from past practice. The annual Reaching Readers conference and the awards dinner had to be postponed because of uncertain ticket sales.) There were 61 entries from 12 magazines. Judges this year were Jonathan Ball, Ariel Gordon, Rosemarie Finlay, Martin Cash, Scott Messenger, Veronica Cowan, George Stephenson, Kelly Gray and Allan Britnell. Winners were presented with “Mini-Maggie” plaques at a downtown function. The major presentations will be made at the Association’s 2nd Annual Charity Golf Tournament at Bel Acres Golf Club on August 6. Entry to the tournament is open to all.

The Manitoba Magazine Publishers’ Association is celebrating its 30th year of incorporation this year, representing 26 member publishers with more than 30 magazines. The Association provides networking opportunities, professional development and industry involvement projects for its members.

[UPDATED] Manitoba magazine conference postponed; "Mini-Maggies" reception to be held

[This post has been updated] The annual Manitoba Magazine Publisher's Reaching Readers conference and the associated 7th annual Maggie Awards due to be held May 28 have been postponed. A note to members from executive director Linda Hazelwood says that attendance did not support the expense of going ahead.

"There seems to be too many other things happening next week (which of course we were not aware of when we picked our date), which caused a time conflict. We will individually contact all those who booked, to discuss refunds.

"The Maggie winners will still be announced on May 28, but by email, web, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media outlets.

"The events are not cancelled, just postponed. The conference sessions will happen as single events, while the Maggies Awards will be moved to be a part of the golf tournament wind-up dinner on August 6 at Bel Acres Golf Club. We will arrange transport from the city for those who do not wish to drive."

[Update: In lieu of the awards, a Mini-Maggies, will be held to recognize this year’s winners. The Mini-Maggies will take place at 6:30 pm on May 28, at the Governor’s Boardroom at Bailey’s Restaurant in Winnipeg. There will be a cash bar, and the MMPA is requesting all attendees RSVP to exedir@manitobamagazines.ca. All are welcome.]

The Manitoba Magazine Publishers' Association hosts the 7th Annual Maggie Awards May 28 at the Viscount Gort Hotel in Winnipeg. 6:30 p.m. 

Entries are judged in four publishing groups: Art & Literary; Business-to-business, association or custom; Consumer; and Best of the Best.

Readers can help choose Manitoba's magazine of the year

Readers can vote for what they consider Manitoba's magazine of the year. These "people's choice" votes can influence the winner; individual votes are given a point value and added to judges individual scores. The entries from which to choose are:

Kayak wins magazine of the year in the Maggies

Kayak: Canada's History Magazine for Kids has won Magazine of the Year in the Maggies, the awards program run by the Manitoba Magazine Publishers Association. The People's Choice award went to The Cellar Door. Multiple winners were Canada's History magazine (4) and Prairie Fire (2). The awards were presented at a gala event on Thursday night:

Still time to make a "People's Choice" in Manitoba mag awards

As part of the Maggies, the annual awards of the Manitoba Magazine Publishers Association,readers are again being asked to cast their votes online in the selection of the People's Choice award for all magazine of the year entrants. Voting closes September 12. Voters are eligible win a subscription to the Manitoba magazine of their choice. Twenty-one magazines have made 86 individual entries in 16 categories in the Maggies.   

Covet named Manitoba magazine of the year in Maggie awards

Covet magazine has been named magazine of the year in the annual "Maggies", the awards presented by the Manitoba Magazine Publishers Association. Covet won both the plaudits of the judges but also the People's Choice Award tallied by online voting. The awards were presented Thursday at an event at the Manitoba Club in Winnipeg. 

Taking home the most awards was Prairie Fire, winning all categories in the art and literary group. Football Manitoba's new publication The Huddle won for best cover photography and best single issue consumer title. Canada's History won for best column or department and best digital initiative. Covet is a recently launched (spring 2012) controlled circulation homes publication describing itself as "modern living with a Prairie twist". 

Manitoba magazine awards have a "people's choice" component online

You've got until August 10 to vote for your favourite Manitoba magazine as part of the Manitoba Magazine Publishers Association (MMPA)'s "Maggie Awards". This year for the first time, in addition to the juried selections, there is a people's choice award. You need simply log on and pick one title.The awards themselves are September 13.

Canada's History magazine wins three "Maggies" in Manitoba magazine competition

[This post has been updated] Canada's History magazine won three times in the third annual "Maggie" awards which wrapped up the annual conference of the Manitoba Magazine Publishers Association. The history title, published by Canada's National History Society in Winnipeg won as consumer magazine of the year, for best editorial package for its feature "Shell Shock" and best non-fiction feature for the article "Isolation", by Cec Rosner. 

The awards were given out at a ceremony at the Inn at the Forks Thursday evening.

Other awards included:

• Business-to-business magazine of the year: Canadian Journal of Green Building and Design
• Best cover: CV2 : Winter 2010 Issue “At the Root of Voice” which featured Poet Elizabeth Backinsky
• Consumer best regular column or department: "Bordercolumn" by Robert Enright in Border Crossings

In addition to the 16 magazine categories, three student awards were presented for the Red River College creative communications program's annual magazine project competition. The student competition is adjudicated by the MMPA and the best project gets $1,000.
All other awards are made by a jury that included Stephen Benstead, novelist and bookseller; Judith Kearns, chair of the Department of Rhetoric, Writing, and Communications at the University of Winnipeg; David Roberts, non-fiction writer and a juried artist and illustrator; and Jill Wilson, editor of the Winnipeg Free Press’ Tab and Detour sections.

Each winner received an individually crafted awards plaque created by Manitoba artist Jolanta Solkalski of Clear Energy Glass Studio.

It's a precursor to the Manitoba Magazine Publishers’ Association 3rd Annual Maggies which will be presented at the Inn at the Forks in Winnipeg the evening of April 28th, capping off this year’s annual conference: Pages and Portals.

Manitoba hosts Best on Page travelling show of excellence in magazine ads

Best on Page, the annual competition and exhibition of the best magazine advertising, has gone on the road. For the month of September, it is on display at Winnipeg's Millennium Library in its Blankenstein Gallery, open to the public free of charge. The exhibition on loan from Magazines Canada is co-hosted by the library and the Manitoba Magazine Publishers' Association. It showcases award winning magazine ads from Canada and around the world, showcasing creativity and innovation at its best.

“This exhibit is an excellent way to celebrate the innovation and creativity of magazine advertising. It is also a great lead in to the many events and displays that we have planned for October: Manitoba Magazines Month”, notes Deborah Morrison, MMPA President and CEO and Publisher of Canada’s History magazine.“We will display and distribute sample copies of Manitoba magazines and offer special subscription rates just for Manitobans at a number of locations so that even more readers can enjoy the diversity of great national and local magazines that are published right here.”

Best on Page has been an annual event in Toronto since 2006, celebrating the power and potential of the magazine ad page. Last year the Best on Page Awards were introduced, national magazine ad award program honouring Canada’s best in consumer and B2B magazine advertising.

Border Crossings named Manitoba's magazine of the year

Art magazine Border Crossings was named magazine of the year at the second annual Maggie Awards, presented by the Manitoba Magazine Publishers Association (MMPA). The awards dinner was held on Thursday night in Winnipeg and honours were given in 15 categories. 

The People's Choice Award went to Hearts of the Country, a rural women's bimonthly published in Fisher Branch, Manitoba.
