Will these become known as the "foodies"?

The winners of the inaugural Cuisine Canada Food Media Awards will be announced on Sept. 18 in Winnipeg, from more than 50 entries in the various classes of visual and writing. The one sure thing is that well-known Canadian magazines will win.

The awards are part of the Cuisine Canada national conference Sept. 16 to 19. (For a number of years, this conference had been called Northern Bounty but has been renamed this year.) The food media awards are sponsored by Faye Clack Communications.

Finalists in the Best Food and Drink Writing are James Chatto for "Call of the Wild" and "County Fare," both of which appeared in Toronto Life, and Jennifer Cockrail-King's "Prairie Regional Cuisine," which appeared in Western Living.

For the Best Food and Drink Photography (single editorial -- image) finalists include two entries from Canadian Living: "Show Us The Beef" and "Vegetable Samosas," both photographed by Yvonne Duivenvoorden, props styling by Oksana Slavutych with Claire Stubbs doing the food styling for "Show Us The Beef," and Lucie Richard for "Vegetable Samosas." A third finalist comes from WISH magazine, "Cheese Please," photographed by James Tse with Andrea Stewart editor and Sandy Kim art director.

Best Food and Drink Photography (editorial series) finalists include two entries from WISH: "Distinctly Canadian" with Rob Kinghorn photographer and Claire Stubbs food stylist and"Double Bill," with Douglas Bradshaw photographer and Ruth Gangbar food stylist. "Harvest Home" garnered a finalist spot for Derek Shapton, photographer working for CAA Magazine.

There is also an award for electronic presentation (video).

The winners will receive an original Inuit sculpture on an acrylic base created by artist Ruth Aqiatusuk.

Cuisine Canada is a national alliance of Canadian culinary professionals promoting the development, use, and recognition of fine Canadian food and wine. Its members include food editors from magazines such as Canadian Living, Chatelaine, Elm Street magazine and newspapers like the Montreal Gazette and Vancouver Sun; food writers, cookbook authors, executive chefs; commodity associations, home economists, food processors, caterers, publishers, academics and governmentCorporate members include such organizations as the University of Guelph, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, Ace Bakery, the Canola Council of Canada, Stratford Chefs School and the Saskatchewan Turkey Producers Marketing Board.

Elm Street eh? The folks there might want to update their "About us" page, at least every 2.5 years or so.
