Canadian Living and House & Home best Canadian newsstand performers

Coast to Coast Distribution Services has released a list of 2,700 magazines' newsstand sales in units and gross retail dollars in Canada. It was done with data from The NewsGroup, Newswest, Metro News, Benjamin News and MediaLogix. It represents data on about 96% of all single copies sold in this country.

The top 10 titles are all American and the number one is, natch, People magazine, with 6.4 million units sold in 2006 and gross retail revenue of $32 million.

Top Canadian titles (with rank) are:
  • Canadian Living (15), 1,439,038 /$4.8 million
  • Canadian House and Home (16), 789,835 / $4.7 million
  • Style at Home (19), 676,950 / $3.4 million
  • Chatelaine (23), 753,950 / $2.9 million
Maclean's took a big jump, from being ranked 59th in 2005 to 44th last year. It increased its single copy sales 37%, selling 102,403 more copies for a gross retail take in 2006 of $1.9 million.

Masthead magazine's website (sub req'd) has extracted a summary list of Canadian titles.

CTC president Glenn Morgan told Masthead the list was compiled for the benefit of the entire industry. “It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” Morgan said.

In an interview yesterday, Morgan spoke about the list’s objective with regards to retailers. “Our hope is that retailers will look at this and will see where the magazines rank,” he said. “And that will help them display the magazines more effectively.”

In a follow-up interview today, Morgan talked about how the list could benefit publishers. “Often a new publisher comes to us and they’ll have a really cockeyed formula for newsstand distribution,” he said. “By showing them comparative titles, we can bring them down to earth. [For larger publishers], it’s also a good tool to measure yourself against the competition. ”
