Shame on you, say the critics;
I'm proud I did it, says Toronto Life editor
Marco Ursi, the editor of Masthead, has done a commendable follow-up on the controversy over the Toronto Life cover story (see previous post). He reports that the article was criticized at a news conference Tuesday morning on a number of specific points, from the wording of the sub-head and the conflation of Aqsa Parvez's killing with earlier media stories about sharia law and the arrest of the Toronto 18 to the "disrepectful" use of pictures lifted from Facebook.
"Misogyny is not just Muslim," said Nuzhat Jafr of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women, adding, "This story does nothing to stop the violence while instigating fear and loathing against all Muslims."And Ursi interviewed Toronto Life editor Sarah Fulford who, not unexpectedly, defended the story and her decision to run it:
“We wanted to do what magazines do best, which it to flesh out her story in a long form magazine piece. Big picture. Lots of context. Lots of reporting.”
