Macfarlane to give keynote at Camp BCAMP

Camp BCAMP is being presented January 23–25 by the British Columbia Association of Magazine Publishers at Dunsmuir Lodge in Sidney, BC. The professional development retreat is pitched at small and medium-sized BC publishers.

John Macfarlane, editor and co-publisher of The Walrus, will deliver a keynote address. Other sessions include the following:
  • Apocalypse L8R: The Future of Print Literacy - David Beers, The Tyee, Jennifer MacLeod, Color, Jim Sutherland, WMA Lifetime Achievement Award winner, and Elizabeth Rains, Pacific Rim Magazine, discuss the implications for print magazines given today’s txting and twittering trends.
  • Circulation Pump - Jon Spencer of Abacus Circulation tells us how to boost renewals, add upsells, promote gift subscriptions, increase pass-along, encourage referrals and use online techniques to develop a magazine’s readership.
  • Mags Money Management - Jessica Ross, executive editor of Homemakers, guides us through the money maze with an informative session on the process of editorial budgeting.
  • Web Sight - An editorial and publishing perspective on the magazine website. With Matt O’Grady, BC Business, Rebecca Philps, Vancouver magazine and Western Living, and Kim Peacock, Transcontinental Media.
  • Punctuation, period! - In her endearing and entertaining style, Frances Peck of the Editors’ Association of Canada highlights the trickiest punctuation pitfalls, predicaments and problems.
  • e-Marketing: Digg This - The Tyee’s marketing coordinator, Lisa Manfield, showcases successful viral marketing campaigns and provides ideas for using Web 2.0 to engage readership and further marketing goals.
  • BC Arts Council - Meet the new acting literary and publishing program coordinator, Chris Gudgeon, who will give an overview of the program.
By the way, students registered in B.C. writing and publishing programs are entitled to the members' rate.
