Significant gender gap in salaries continues
at U.S. magazines

There is a significant gender gap in salary among people working in U.S. magazines, according to data published by Folio:, drawn from its 2009 salary survey.
The trade magazine noted that in no position in any publishing category were women earning a mean salary higher than their male counterparts. The gap widens the higher up the magazine food chain you go, with the difference being $20,000 or more in management positions.
On the editorial side, men and women earn about the same salaries until they become editorial director/editor-in-chief, when men earn about 8.7% more. In sales, the gap is wider: about 21% at the senior end; about 10% at an account exec's position. The smallest gap seems to be in the art department.

We've often talked about running a professional development course on salary negotiation. I heard a depressing anecdote from a friend: in her hiring experience at a San Francisco newspaper, she never once had a woman counter offer during salary negotiations--and never had a man NOT counter offer. We need to get skilled in fighting for what we deserve to be paid!
