In the suddenly crowded category of Edmonton city magazines, one title is cutting back, the other is ramping up, according to a story in
Mastheadonline (sub req'd).
Edmonton Life, started last year by Captive Media, is reducing its frequency from monthly to quarterly. Meanwhile the Edmonton edition of
Avenue Magazine, published in partnership with Calgary's RedPoint Media, is moving up to 10 times a year from six, come September. (Edmonton hadn't had even one city glossy since 1988, when
Edmonton magazine, formerly part of the Comac magazine empire, was folded.

Personally, I think everyone knows what this means, Avenue is racing ahead; the public AND advertisers have accepted it as their magazine. Edmonton Life started out strong but now seems like an old dinosaur who just won't die. The articles are boring, the magazine format is yesterday and there really isn't anything that interesting about it. At least Avenue has a trusted template, design, format, look, they can borrow from and create a magazine which attracts both advertisers AND readers. As a member of the media for 30+ years, I for one won't be surprised when Edmonton Life closes its doors.
