Masthead web site to stay in business

Mastheadonline, the website, has survived a near-death experience and will be carrying on in the new year under the same management (North Island Publishing) and with the same full-time editor (Marco Ursi), it has been announced. The print version of the magazine, Masthead, will be ending with the issue that is currently under production (Jan/Feb 09).
“I’m like totally thrilled,” Ursi said. “I have some wicked new ideas for the site and look forward to serving the industry with more news, features, service and opinions. I also get to keep sticking my nose into other magazine people’s business without having to make an excuse for it.”
The annual tallies, job board and other features of the magazine will continue online.

While this is pleasant news, the irony is inescapable - a magazine about magazines... available on-line only. Well better than nothing.

Delighted we will still have Marco to kick around. The fact is, online is the future for many of the products we now call magazines, so this is not an inappropriate structure.

I always believed magazines are all about a unique, intimate communications relationship with a specific audience. So nothing has changed, really. We lose the glossy paper but gain timeliness and interactivity.
