David Johnston out as executive director of Professional Writers Association of Canada

Although no announcement has been made, it has been confirmed that David Johnston is no longer the executive director of the Professional Writers Association of Canada (PWAC). Johnston joined the association in February, succeeding the previous E.D. John Degen, who went to the Ontario Arts Council as its literature officer.

Johnston was a literary agent and writer/producer of documentary films for 20 years. He stood as a Green Party of Ontario candidate in the 2007 Ontario election and served as its culture critic.

He was deeply involved in the discussion this summer with Transcontinental Media concerning its contentious master author agreement and his name was associated with the recent press release urging freelance writers to boycott all Transcon magazine work. It's not known who will represent PWAC should those talks go any further.

Established in 1976, PWAC represents some 600 freelance editors and writers across Canada.
