Gourmet magazine and 3 other titles closed by Condé Nast

Not only is Condé Nast cutting costs across its magazines by some 25% or more, it has today announced that it is closing some venerable titles, including Gourmet magazine, which for many foodies has been a bible since it was launched in December, 1940.

According to a report in the New York Times, Gourmet, rather than Bon Appetit (which had been thought more vulnerable) is for the chop, as are the children-and-family magazine Cookie, Modern Bride and Elegant Bride. Condé Nast still publishes Brides, of which the two other titles were offshoots.

Condé Nast has seen the loss of 8,000 ad pages across its magazines so far this year. The company has always had a reputation of being reluctant to close magazines, although more recently it closed Portfolio, a business magazine, Domino, a shelter title, and folded Men's Vogue back into Vogue.

It's sad to see the death of an icon among magazines. But if Conde Nast had to lose one of its two heavyweight food magazines, I'm not surprised that Bon Appetit is the survivor. It's much more approachable, with photography that makes you hungry and a mission any browser can understand. It's about the food, not the good life that's slipping beyond so many people's reach.

I agree, Rona. We used to buy and read Gourmet religiously, even shipped copies back from England (daft, I know), but in recent years have drifted away. I am not a reader of Bon Appetit, either, it should be said. But right now I think that Conde Nast is doing triage, saving those which can be saved, euthanizing the others. I understand that they will maintain the website for a time, but that seems like a sop.

This is so sad. Yes, the good life is definitely slipping away. But why Gourmet and not their Golf titles???? Waaa!
