Tony Viner to retire as CEO of Rogers Media

Tony Viner, the man who presided over the integration of Maclean Hunter publications into the vast Rogers empire, has announced his retirement. According to a story in the Globe and Mail, Viner told colleagues on Monday that he would be leaving after two decades with Rogers Media.
On Mr. Viner’s watch, the company launched a specialty sports broadcaster and spread its wings with a number of acquisitions, including the purchase and integration of Maclean-Hunter’s publications, the Toronto Blue Jays and CITY-TV. He’s also volunteered his time as a board member on countless industry groups. In 2007, Mr. Viner cashed in a long-term compensation package worth more than $40-million that reflected his contributions to Rogers.

Let's not forget Mr. Viner's ultimate Rogers legacy -- the massive disaster that was and is the Bills in Toronto series. As the kids say, EPIC FAIL!

We'd like to pay you more than $1/wd, we really would, but we just don't have the money. We had to give $40 million to Tony Viner. So now is not a good time for freelance writers to be greedy. Let's let the ad dollars come back and then we'll see what we can do. Ken Whyte will open the purse strings soon enough. Wait, we have to give him a raise, too. Maybe try us in 2025. We will have recovered by then. Actually, we'll be giving Ken $65 million at that point now that I think about it. This freelance conundrum is sure going to be tough to crack.
